When I called my dealership last week, the salesman (Batman on this site) told me about that $500 deal plus additional $$$ off if the HHR (or any Chevy) has been sitting on their lot for over a certain period of time.

Sounded like a pretty good deal... but it won't help me any since I already own an HHR.

Any idea on how long that certain period of time is? I'm just trying to get some idea of what I can haggle with for the local dealers.

I have to call my dealership again (today) and I'll ask about that $500 deal. I think that other additional $$$ incentive is just for that particular dealership? (might be a local thing?)

Well, I did the whole "Give me your 'out the door' price with 5 different internet sales guys. Two did not respond, one said he would call me - but did not, the other two gave me quotes that were within $200 of what I already received from the buying service. I believe that there isn't a lot wiggle room with the LS when you don't add any options. Everyone told me the vehicle would have to be ordered unless I gave them some freedom to check other colors/options. The buying service did call GM to see if an HHR already slated for production could be modified to my specs. There was one, so I had them put in for the changes I wanted (and yes, SoCal, I added the running boards... so send me some money!). I'll find out by Thursday if the changes have been made. If so, my wait should only be 4 weeks...

Ok... just got off the phone with my dealership, here's the scoop (catch is more like it)

The Chevy "March Madness" $500 deal is aimed at what "they" call: "Out of old stock" new cars that have been sitting on the lot for over 120 days.

Sorry to say, it might be kinda hard to find an HHR that has been sitting on a dealership lot that long.

Well, I waited too long and could not get the change order processed. So I have decided not to get an HHR... for now. I have something in play that may allow me to upgrade from the LS model. I'll just have to wait and see how it plays out.
