Programing Remote/Locking & unlocking doors

Picked up an 2008 HHR rental today and noticed I cannot lock and unlock the doors with the remote.
Can the remote be programmed using the owners manual or does it have to be done by the dealer?
The rental agent did not know.

bigallis the key fob remote has to be programed by the dealership.

Try this-
Stand beside HHR and hold the remote LOCK and UNLOCK buttons until you hear door locks cycle. Works most of the time.

You need a Tech 2 Programmer to do the job.....It's a little more than a $50.00 "scan" tool.

Tried the both buttons thing today. It did not work.
So, when I return the rental I will tell them about the problem.
No big deal.
