questions re: towing a 2007 HHR Wagon

Hello. We are looking at possibly purchasing a 2007 HHR Wagon to tow behind our Motorhome. It has a manual transmission, and though I have done some research, I still have questions. What is needed in the way of getting the car ready to be towed, I know it needs a base plate, tow bar, wiring harness, etc, but is there someone that installs it in Tucson Arizona? Are there less expensive options than the Blue Ox, and what does it come as a complete kit, with harness, brake system, tow bar, etc. We have not done this before, so we are very new to the process. Please forgive what may sound like total ignorance, but it would help me tremendously if I could get some factual answers from "seasoned" RV'ers, and "towers". Thanks, Bel.

First place to ask is your local motorhome service center, I would imagine Tucson has several.

We tow our 2007, which is a five speed, also and have since it was new. I have the Blue Ox base plate and tow bar. For the electrical wiring, went with the GM kit and one way diodes. As far as brakes, I had the US Gear system installed. Its not inexpensive, but has worked flawlessly for years, now. IMO saving a few $$'s on tow gear is not wise, as that's a pretty expensive investment you are dragging along behind your motor-home. In six years, have had zero problems with any of the tow gear. As far as Installers, you should talk to other RV'rs locally. They are your best source of information. I could make some recommendations, but it would be in the Southern California area, no help for you.

hhr toad

i have a 2009 hhr automatic. we have towed it behind our american coach for almost 2 years now. no issues. i live in Tucson. on the 2009 i am supposed to pull fuse #8 out prior to towing. i have installed a switch on the dash that i flip prior to towing. because most states require a supplemental brake system on vehicles weighing 3000 lbs or more. i bought a brake buddy. i also put on a diode kit for the lighting. Good Luck, JIM

We tow a 2008 HHR automatic, using the Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain tow bar, a Roadmaster baseplate with a Ready Brake supplemental brake sysyem. I installed a TowDaddy taillight wire harness, and a fuse switch(#8) by RV- Parts Plus. The battery will discharge if the fuse is not pulled/switched off. The location of the fuse
necessitates a switch. I am completely satisfied after 10,000 miles. I have used the Blue Ox tow bar on another dingy but prefer the Roadmaster.
