Racking up the costs

Could be just a failed timing chain tensioner, and pretty cheap & easy (but NOT foolproof) fix. My 2008 LS started making chain-like noises on startup so I replaced it with the updated part and that took care of it.
This (very good) thread says it’s only about the 2006-2008 2.2L but I don’t see why it wouldn’t apply equally to the 2.0 and 2.4 and that’s mentioned in the comments:

Do math on the hubs; $30 vs $200. You can replace the cheap ones 6 times before you spend $200 on probably the same item in a different box.
On my 2 HHRs the front hubs were easy just a 2.5lb love tap. Some are lucky.

Front. I agree, they can be a bear especially in rust belt states that use salt. I saved my last pair of rotors that were bad and was planning on mounting a bad rotor and tapping it with a mallet after everything else was was unmountedpo or cleared away. A slid hammer attached if an adapter could be fabbed up might work as well.

Rust never sleeps, and rockin' roll will never die- N Young
That's what I miss about the great 'ole northeast; The RUST?! NOT!!
The BF hammer, some type of puller and maybe an air chisel to loosen. A can of rust buster and a 12-pack of PBR.
