Is that pic from on base? Do you have to go on base at all and if you do, do you have to remove the detector? At Hanscom and Westover they make you take them down

Yea that's on base. Actuall that is the heat plant you see and the dinning facility is behind me. I work in bld 412 directly in front of me here. They don't make you take them down, but occasionally they will make you turn them off. Mine sitting high like that, they usually don't say anything. My wifes is on the dash and they tell her to turn her's off quite often.

They're pretty useless around here too. They pace you with an unmarked car or a marked car with no light bar more than they speed trap around here or the cars have Instant-On so the radar detector is useless anyways. There are speed traps on our highways occasionally but only in certain spots so living here my whole life I know where to slow down. They use aircraft on the throughway. I used to swear by my radar detector when I was younger but after enough driving in my area I declared it useless and haven't driven with one in like ten years. I've only had two tickets in those ten years. They both came from being paced and I'm a habitual speeder so I guess that says something about how useful they are to me. They might be good in a rural area where they speed trap a lot but I have no need for one in my daily driving in this area. If I took a long road trip I would probably pick one up to cover myself in unkown areas.

Asking about radar detectors is like asking about oil, oil changes, filters, vehicles, polishes/waxes....everyone will have an opinion for what is the best for them.

Frankly, the only advise I'll offer, if you decide to get one, is to research for what FITS YOUR NEEDS and budget.

For example, Escort builds approximately 10 different detectors. Some may not be a suitable fit for your needs ....some may not even be competitive in detection warnings. Some provide more "false alarms" than others, some do not provide warnings against certain types of radar guns (I believe there are 5 different radar beams, now), or "laser" guns, etc. Some battery powered units are not as efficient as the plug in type.

Location of installation is a valuable point. As Solman illustrated, if the mounting point is higher up you will probably have earlier detection (years ago, it's been rumored, Corvette designed the thickness of their dash to accomodate the Escort. They changed that detail shortly after when they discovered a "cheaper" brand performed better when mounted on the visor).

When I purchased one, years ago, I picked what was best for me....above the recommendations of friends who had other brands and models. But, it worked better FOR MY APPLICATION, than the units I borrowed from friends for evaluation.

Oh, forgot to mention an important item.....they will not work through metallic windows and metallic shade film.... unless the technology has changed.

MitB - check your local/provincial rules regarding fuzzbusters BEFORE you buy. I know at least Ontario has outlawed them (you are warned of this when you cross the border).

i'm pretty sure their illegal here, but so is speeding. My dads friend had one (not sure which) in his camaro. Cop made him smash it on the road plus he got a fine. for my needs i want someting for all around. city and highway. I rather have a few false alarms than none at all and risk getting busted. Cash wise i sure aint rich but i'm willing to pay a few hundred. I'd like to mount it somewhere other than the windshield cuz i dont want everybody to see it.

(Just so you guys know i'm not some hell raiser kid tearin' around in his car. I just want this as a percaution. I've felt the sting of tickets before and it hurt!)
