Radio replacement

I have a 2011 HHR. The aux port provides very inconsistent sound. I'd like to replace the radio with a salvaged radio that has a USB port.

Any potential problems with this? Are all the connections to make the USB port work there?

While the radio will pop right in, your HHR won't recognize it.

The radios and vehicles are keyed to each other, and having your dealer program your HHR will be necessary for it to function.

Now thanks to lefty51, there is a way for owners of 2006-2008 models to avoid a trip to the dealer as outlined in the "How To" thread below.

But the jury is out on whether his method will work on post 2008 models due to some significant design changes to the radio circuitry.

P.S. to the forum!

When I was thinking about replacing the head unit in my 2007 LT2 I went to a stereo shop that I have been dealing with for about 6 years now. Always have great advice and have never steered me wrong. They did say that many head units will work and many will not even if you get the LAN adapter boxes and other stuff to connect them. In this case I would suggest doing the same and make sure to have the exact model of the head unit and such and a good shop can tell you what to do and how to do it. In my case I decided on a Pioneer unit which was not cheap and all the little electronic gizmos cost about as much as the stereo but it sure is cool!
