Rear Cargo Shelf

Rear Cargo Shelf
My local stealer has been no help with this, so I'll ask the experts. How much weight have you guys and gals put on the rear cargo shelf?
My reason for asking are two. One is a 80 lb male greyhound, and the other is a 55 lb. female treeing walker coonhound. The greyhound does NOT fit well in the Jetta by himself, let alone if I had to bring my 3 yr old son with me. The grey doesn't like uneven surfaces to lay on, and if I leave the cargo shelf at the lower spot, it'll be level with the rear seats when folded down. I just don't want to find out after the fact that he's too heavy for that shelf. The coonhound isn't as big a problem, but she does deserve a nice place to lay down while in the vehicle, on the rare occasion she decides to lay down while in the vehicle.
Thanks for the info.
