Remote Key reprogram

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum. I own a 2008 chevy hhr lt which we recently bought it from a friend. The car already had remote key issues, and where we are, there are no certified dealers in the country. I just got new Cr2016 batteries and I have two remotes. Can anyone please guide me in the reprogramming process?

If they just need new batteries, they shouldn't need reprogramming. Technically, the car is programmed to accept the fob, not the other way around.

Clean the contacts. Check the condition of the cage that holds the battery, the solder points sometimes break, then the fob quits working.

all seems fine but the car still doesn't respond to any of the buttons. I am not even sure if the key was working with the previous owners. Is there a way to do it all over again?

You keep saying key. The key should not have any buttons.

Are they the correct fobs? Maybe post good pics of the front and back.

Is this a US or European version of the HHR ?

Reason for asking. I know there was some programming issues that pertained to only the 2008 year model. The problem was after a dead vehicle battery those cars would "lose" their programming for the remotes. It would then need updated programming installed by a GM dealer.
(maybe someone can find that TSB in our archives )

I don't really have a problem not having the remote it's just that the theft alarm turns on everytime we unlock the car with the key manually and doesn't stop till the key is put in the ignition and turned. I tried turning off the unlock horn from the Dic menu but its only temporary we noticed.

The fobs take a CR2032 battery , perhaps that’s the problem, it is embossed right on the fob case. You stated you got a new CR 2016 battery.
CR2016 Lithium Battery 3V, No they are not interchangeable. The 2016 is thinner than the 2032.
