Remote Start

Sounds like the wrong fob came with your car. I know I have learned to ask the dealer whenever I buy a used car if it has both sets of keys and fobs. Some years ago when I bought a used Aurora the service dept had a box of extra fobs. They picked one out of a of 'extras' box and then programmed it to my car. Luckily it was the correct fob with the correct button format and since the car had memory seats they were able to get the #2 fob that was missing. I believe with the HHR a standard fob without the remote start can be programmed to allow function of the open/close/panic buttons. Only thing missing is the remote start button. I will say that at first I thought the remote start was a gimmick. I find it useful in our 90+ weather to start the car so the A/C can start blowing as I walk up to it in a parking lot. As I load groceries, etc, the car is cooling and is much more comfortable than if I hadn't started it in advance. I'm not talking letting the car run 10 min, 2-3 min makes a nice difference and not much fuel was wasted.

This was a lot of great info from a lot of folks. Thank you. My HHR was a California rental or fleet car. I think there is a good chance this will work.
My plan of attack: ground the purple wire, and try to remote start with the lock and panic switches. If it works, I will purchase a new fob, and get a new shell for my current fob.
Yes, remote start wastes some fuel, but when the temp is 20 below, and you hop into a completely cold car, your breath fogs the windows. I promise to use it sparingly.
