You should have no problem with cutting the spotter mirrors off of the main mirror. It has a plastic backing plate which it is glued to. So as long as you Do Not bend it and you should be good to go.

All you need to do is squirt some lighter fluid around the top of the spotter mirror and it will disolve the double backed tape which holds it on. DO NOT FLEX the car mirror as they are thin and will break easily. If you are adventureous, push in on the bottom of the sideview mirror until it is at its lowest down angle, place masking tape across the top of the mirror housing, use a door trim tool to pry the mirror/plate assembly off of the motor stabs and you can work on it on your workbench. When snapping the mirror back in, you must use a rubber sanding block to distribute your pushing force so as not to flex and crack the mirror. That procedure is from the shop manual. If you F/U, the replacement part is under $30. You should have no sweat using the lighter fluid so try that first and simply pull it off gradually as the fluid disolves the adhesive.

It may have been an "extra" on the newer models.

How hard was it with the fishing line?

Does the lighter fluid actually dissolve the adhesive?

I used dental floss and GOOF-OFF, followed with alcohol (rubbing & beer) and a razor blade. The only difficulty is protecting your fingers, another guy use for duck tape (number 100,000,043)!
