Does that mean a 2009 LS automatic *can* be enabled for OEM remote start?

When I did the solder fix to my 3-button key fob, I noticed the board was fitted for a couple of additional buttons. Aside from upgrading the key fobs, I assume remote start requires additional parts such as a "hood open sensor"?

I don't have the foggiest idea. Mine has remote start and that is all I can tell you. I have only about a weeks experience with HHRs. My fob has 3 buttons plus the panic button, lock, unlock and start.
