Road trip!

Hi all. I am taking a road trip in a couple of weeks in my panel. I am leaving Houston and headed for Mt. Zion National Park in S.W. Utah.

We will be heading northwest to Amarillo and my first nights stop will be in Albuquerque NM. Then on to Zion the following day. I have been this route before and have seen most everything along the way. We have just never made it as far as Zion before on a road trip.

Places we have visited on past trips. Cadillac Ranch, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, Winslow AZ. (standin on the corner), Meteor Crater AZ. Moab Ut., Arches National Park, Canyon Lands National Park.

All very cool places. If you have not been you should try them. Besides Zion I want to see some new territory. Anyone have any places I should visit while I am there? I know Vegas is not that far away but that really does not interest me.

Let me know your thought!

Bryce canyon is close to Zion and should be seen if possible, also if you have not been to the North Rim of Grand Canyon it is much nicer than the South Rim. I lived at Grand Canyon for more than 40 years and worked both rims. We now live in Kanab, Utah so if we can be of help let me know.

Thanks for the replies. We have been to Carlsbad a couple of times and unfortunately will not be in the southern part of New Mexico this trip.

I thought about the north rim of the canyon but was not sure how different it would be from the south rim. Thank you for the suggestion. I will add it to my list.

I will gladly accept other info!

When at Zion you need to hike the Virgin River which is the river that bisects the canyon. At times you will be in the river so wear sneakers---no sandles, flip-flops, or bare feet. I actually wore my hiking boots (non leather). It is an awsome hike with the canyon walls rising hundreds of feet on both sides in the narrow canyon! Oh, and be sure to heed the flash flood warning if posted. Not the place you want to be if that occurs!

Another interesting place out that way is Goblin Valley state park. The Esclante Steps is a cool drive also.

Thank you. The wife and I have actually been to Moab and Arches 3 times and I agree it is an amazing place. Thats why we keep going back I guess. We are going a little further west this time to explore more of the great state of Utah.
