side rails
Are side rails for appearance only? Can they actually be used to strap down a fiberglass rooftop luggage carrier? This carrier doesn't require center rails. I don't have crossbars on my hhr. Help!!! I am traveling cross country on Sunday, and don't have time or extra cash to purchase factory crossbars. Any ideas?
Thank you so much for any help!

Keep in mind that your total weight on the roof should not exceed 100lbs. (Chevy recommendation)
With that in mind, I would think you could put your luggage carrier on the roof as long as it sits between the rails and you can secure straps from the rails to the luggage carrier.
I would put something between the roof and the carrier to prevent paint damage.
If you are not comfortable securing without cross-rails, Thule makes universal crossbars that would work.
Others on this site have used them with satisfactory results.
Try doing a search under cross-rails, at the top of the page and it might link you to previous posts on this subject.
Good luck and let us know how you make out?
Also, post some pictures of your HHR when you get a chance.

That is what the side rails are there for. They are supposed to take the weight though, not the roof panel between them. I can bet if you sat a 100lb weight in the middle of the roof it would dent. And arent the roof rails rated to 150lb?
If the luggage carrier is too narrow to sit on both side rails, you might be able to macgyver some homemade cross rails or a sheet of wood secure enough to hold it, but I wouldnt recommend it.
