It helps to turn it as you pull. They are not threaded on, but there is a "thread" pattern to the shaft the knob is on

mine would NOT just pull off. i had to twist them off.

IS there any way to modify the factory shaft so that the locks dont pop up as high??? ...and also isnt haggered looking

yeah. i pulled the knob off, and used a dremel cut wheel to trim the "shaft" off. i think i took 3/8in basicly used needle nose pliers to hold it, and cut what i could off. i also trimmed the knob a little bit.

So does the pop-up that sticks out of the door have a hole on the bottom that a rod from the actually Door lockset goes into??

Yes, the factory knobs are hollow, and the rod inserts into knob.

For those located in Canada with a black interior, CT sells a door knob assortment (4 pairs) for Fords, of which one pair is black and looks like a perfect fit. $5.79 in the Help! section.

I'm planning to cut mine and reuse the OEM knobs, but if I screw it up I'll pick up a set.

For only 5 bucks, you might want to have them on hand. No matter how carefully I tried to remove mine, they all broke. I wouldn't even have attempted one without having the stubbies on hand already.
