in snow

If you cannot disable the traction control, and you get into extreme conditions, you will not have a lot of fun. The TC in our 2006 cannot be turned off unless you slip the auto tranny into first gear. We have been in conditions (snow-covered icy mountain pass) where the top speed was limited to 35-40 mph due to the TC taking control - and that was with snow tires equipped with cable chains!!!! And to get up to that extreme speed one had to drive as if there was a raw egg between your foot and the gas pedal to try and keep the TC from taking over!! Rather embarassing to be passed by everyone and having to stick to the slow lane. In less than extreme conditions it handles snow quite well with snow tires.

I think you will find the HHR to drive pretty much the same as the Cobalt. They really are the same platform.
The key is to have good tires. Snow tires are fine but if you have a very good normal tire they will not be an issue. I use the Goodyear Assurance Triple Treads in the winter and have no problems even with the Turbo engine.
The only thing that has been a little issue is when the snow is over 6" the front bumper turns into a snow plow. The snow fills up the opening to the inter cooler.
Other than that the HHR is not really too much fun in the snow as my Sonoma. With Posi and no stability control I could play around. With the FWD and stability control it is hard to make the car do anything wrong.
So just have a good set of All Season or snow tires and you will have no isses id you are of average skills or better in winter driving.
The only people who struggle are usally those who do not see snow much.
PS the stock Firestones suck as well as the SS Pilots in the snow. Do not judge the HHR by the OE tires.
