But if the previous owner was a rental place I doubt they swapped them just to be different. If I were to guess I would have to say the rear hatch has been repaired and the body guy stuck them on backwards. I doubt the rental place reported it. They probably just fixed it so that's why it doesn't show on the carfax. I had something similar happen on my Mustang. I had the front fenders repaired and when I picked the car up the running mustangs on the side were running with the wind instead of against it. 
I immediately noticed it being the Mustang lover I am but the body guy didn't know any better because they weren't labeled left and right. They had to order me a new set and put them on the right way.

I wasn`t getting tense, just trying to keep the prospective, There`s no way to know what happened, but that`s not a reason to start bashing...
If that car was on a used car lot, all alone, you would have nothing/no way of knowing if the emblems were on the correct side. We know because we see the rear end more often.
Someone at a body shop could care less about something like that.
It was more of an oddity than a statement of quality assurance.
