Steering

Power steering gearbox
From Gearhead1 08-03-2023 05:54 PM
Does the hhr’s have plastic gear in column gearbox like the Cobalts have? If so, does anyone make a replacement gear….preferably metal?

If you mean in the steering column; the column are different part numbers and they both state "Component Parts Not Serviceable"

No metal components available, just a new steering column or if you’re lucky a good used one.

I think you are talking about the power steering gear. I can't think of a way that gear could get mucked, except if the motor froze and the driver just kept forcing the wheel.
Otherwise the motor moves in response to the gear moving, not much friction.

I have an update…..finally hot chance to look at it good with some wiggling help from my wife (steering wheel…lol) while checking for slack in shaft u-joints, I notice looked like upper joint moved on the spines in the column….sure enough, could slide it pretty easy as much as pinch bolt slot would allow. Checked the bolt, it seemed pretty tight….I tightened it up more with 3/8 rachet and socket….slack gone. 95% of rattle gone. Amazing how bad tgat little bit can sound.
Soon as stops raining….checking pinch bolt at rack.

Thanks for the info
