Onstar works like LoJack. Didn't know that. Hmmm. That's a big plus.

I have ONSTAR, and used it during the 1 year trial period several times. Although, I primarily use my cell phone. I did experience just recently, when my cell had a bad signal, and when I switched to Onstar, it was crystal clear.

I have decided to subcribe with the basic coverage, as I agree with crazybob, peace of mind is worth the basic subcription for me.

The only downfalls with onstar are you can be tracked where you go and insurance companies could buy your driving information from onstar or their agent, otherwise most of the goods outweigh what some people do not like as an invasion of privacy.

Just another view

At least I thought it was this board
There are a few limitations with it. It is based on CDMA analog and digital cellular technology, so for the most part if your CDMA based cell phone won't work in a certain area, neither will OnStar.

The GPS portion of it will only work if the vehicle is above ground. If someone steals your OnStar equipped car and they park it underground, it can't be tracked. Once it is moved (above ground) it can be tracked and the police get notified.

They can do it anyway without the onstar. All cars have black boxes in them now with varing amounts of information on them. If you have on star and do not subscribe whats to say that they don't still have the information being transponded back to them.

You can also be tracked with your cellphones, so it's not limited to OnStar.

Some of the OnStar services, like the upcoming "Turn By Turn", need the GPS tracking to offer the service.

What is the basic Onstar fee? And how much to upgrade to more coverage?

Lowest cost plan is the Safe & Sound plan at $199 a year or $16.95 a month.

Go to http://www.onstar.com for the info on the other options.
