Timing chain tensioner
#21
The humped tensioner ( commonly called the new style tensioner) only applies to the 2.2 in the 2006, 2007, 2008 model years
the 2.4 and the 2.0 LNF all years had the humped tensioner
there are many threads about changing them, with or without removing the valve cover to engage or activate it, a sharp smack with an extension or screw driver .

Here is a YouTube video….I thought it was a thread I read here but no…Thing is the guy does not show how to activate a fully assembled new unit….he just reassembles it and pulls the pin in and out effortlessly. Same as mine…I feel no spring pressure at all nor can I get it to activate….push or hit the end….nothing happens.
Snap ring pliers are coming soon. Gonna take it apart.

This is the video,
But why disassemble a perfectly good tensioner? As you see in me posts, you have to push in the plunger 2 mm to release the spring tension. That pushes out the plunger you see as loose , when you install it in the engine and it engages the timing chain guide , then you push in to release it, or engage it.
That plunger moves like it does because it’s not deployed.
Watch closely the last 2 1/2 minutes of this video

Oldblue…I watched the video….I want to make sure it will activate when installed. I will deactivate it and install it when I am convinced it works. In my comments I said I tried everything I can think of to try to manually activate it….it will not activate. Not putting it in until I’m convinced it works.

With the cam cover off, use a long screwdriver of similar tool (stick of wood, plastic etc), stick the end down to where the chain meets the tensioner, give the handle a sharp whack.
The intention is to push the plunger back to the point it unlocks and pops back out. The test would be to check the tension on the chain.
