Towing the HHR Behind a Ford F-250

Do you see any problem with this? My dad wants to get from St Louis to South Florida for the winter but won't fly or leave his dog. He also wants his truck down there to use. I offered to drive up there, tow my HHR behind his truck, and drive him down south. Then I could drive back home.

The only problem I see is the cost of renting the equipment to tow the HHR and the cost of diesel for his truck. Last I saw, it was $3.30 per gallon when regular unleaded was $2.90. Would using a tow dolly add mileage to my HHR? If so, I'd rent a full trailer.

Manual says not to Dolly tow. Not sure but I don't think Dinghy towing adds mileage to your HHR. All you Towers out there correct me if I'm wrong

Notice: Dolly towing your vehicle may cause
damage because of reduced ground
clearance. Always tow your vehicle using the
dinghy towing procedure listed in this
section or put your vehicle on a flatbed truck.
This is the reason Chevy says not so dolly tow. Ground Clearance Issue.

To dinghy tow your HHR you will require a baseplate (“hitch”) costs about $300.00. That is mounted to the front of the HHR and attaches to the tow bar and requires removal of the front fascia to install to the HHR frame and bumper. Labor to install is listed at 2½ hours. Not sure if you can rent the tow-bar itself.

You will need to have wiring with diodes for the taillights or Magnetic Towing Lights.

You have to pull fuse #8 in the fuse panel accessed from the passenger side of the center consul.

The HHR does not record mileage while being towed.

Not sure if this option would be cost effective for you.

To set up our first "toad" 2005 Pontiac Sunfire cost $1,800. including tow bar and supplemental brake "brakebuddy". The cost for the HHR baseplate and wiring was $650.00

Sorry, I should have checked the owner's manual. I will use a trailer instead.
