trailer hitch for wheelchair carrier??s
I have to use an electric mobility scooter to get around now and need to know how to add a wheelchair carrier to the back of my car. All of the carriers I have seen uses a class 3 or 4 trailer hitch and weigh about 85 lbs and the scooter weighs 160 lbs. Does anyone have a scooter or wheelchair carrier hooked to their car? If so what and where did you get it and how does it hook up?
thanks

extra reinforcement and some customization would be needed for the standard hitch since it is just a class 1(installs with 4 bolts in the frame), and for some reason (and this could be wrong) I think the tongue weight on it is pretty low too

Tongue weight for the carrier is probably ok. But the issue is the reciever size. You would have to get the carrier changed from a 2" to a 1 1/4". It can be done though. Some just bolt on. I did that on a hitch haul I have. At first I used a 1 1/4" - 2" adapter, but that made the carrier stick out too far for me. It also made the carried closer to the ground for my taste. One hitch company just sells the 1 1/4" bar, but I can not remember which one it was.

You need to contact who ever sells the carrier and ask if they have one for a 1 1/4" reciever. If they don't, find out if theirs bolts on, or if it's welded on. If it's bolted, on, start looking for the correct 1 1/4" replacement bar. If it's welded on, get with a body shop or a shop that handles hitches (Uhaul, etc).

Debbie -- Try etrailer.com/ their catalog shows a 1-1/4 to 2'' adapter. My hitch has a toung wt. limit of 200# but I'm sure you can nudge that a little higher. They also show a half dozen different carriers. The phone # is
