Transmission add-on

I was thinking - it would be kinda neat to have indicator lights displaying gears on/off (1,2,3 & 4). Maybe mounted on the column or on the fall just below the hazard button. Anyone know if this or something similar has been done?

CAN it be done? What do you think?
Thanks for your knowledge/thoughts/ideas.

It could be done but would be a lot of work. Wiring, sensor, gauge. Plus, exactly what kind of parts would you need?

Funny thing though is my SS with the 5 speed already has a gear shift indicator in the RPD. Must have some kind of gear sensors in the transmission, or maybe on the shifter itself. Not sure what the SS with the auto trans. shows on the RPD.

The SS Auto shows the same display minus the stick indicator at the bottom.

This is blasphemy, so cover your eyes. Once had a 1990 Mitsubishi Mirage that had trans gear indicator lights in the instrument cluster, was a nice feature.

George, heres what I'm thinking: I'm guessing there are wires (or a wire) coming off the TCM that switch the solenoids inside the trani. If I'm right and I can isolate which wire(s) controls which gear then I can tap off those to individual LED's. What do you think?

Great. So it looks like this could be done but which wires? A schematic would be a big help. The Chilton manual doesn't show anything for the trani.

It's digital, you would need a decoder.
