Probably some punk kids. Oh, and I know the broke college kid thing, lol, I am an unemployed, broke, older guy in college, lol. I know that there is some car alarms that if you get a certain distance away from the car it will give a warning to step away, and if the person or animal doesnt do so it will sound the alarm.

Yeah, the only issue is which is what hillsdale already said if they want to do it they are going to do it. So no sense in pay 800 for a system if they can just do it anyways.

Yup. Some kids would take that car alarm as a challenge and do something just because of it.

Were the lugs still there or were they gone? If they were missing, I'd say they were not trying to steal the wheels. Probably just tossed them.

What other cars will these rims fit on? I would look around the surrounding neighborhoods for a kid with a cobalt or HHR. My guess is they drive past your house on a regular basis, and finally acted on temptation

As an insurance damage appraiser, I've got a warm place in my heart (not) for those who cause this kind of damage. At $500 (maybe his deductible?), that's cheap. Most people don't realize the details that are involved in repairing and repainting key scratches. First, you have to take off all the surrounding parts - glass, trim, handles, etc - ALL of it. Then you have to fill and feather-sand the damaged area, restore corrosion protection (if through to metal), then paint, then clearcoat, then reassemble. A real pain. Just as bad as collision damage, except for the big dents. The kicker is that most of these vandals don't get caught........

If they were kids trying to steal the wheels "what they would fit on" is not necessarily a concern..... "they look cool" is as far as the mind goes......
