Speaking of colors, from Yahoo:
"After seven years wearing the color crown, silver has been dethroned.
For the first time this century, more white cars were manufactured in 2007 than those in any other color, according to DuPont’s most recent color study.
In North America, 19 percent of vehicles manufactured in 2007 were either white or "pearl white," which is white with an iridescent or metallic sheen. Eighteen percent of 2007 vehicles were silver, and 16 percent were black, including black with metallic effects.
White has also taken a decisive lead in other countries, including Japan and Mexico. In Europe, however, black was far and away the top color. See the charts below for the full breakdown."

I was talking with my dealer guy (Commercial Fleet Manager and son of one of the dealership owners) today and found out something really interesting.....
All GM models can be ordered with non standand colors. For example, if you wanted a Velocity Yellow HHR it can be ordered for an over ride price of about $150. BUT, you would need to order 5 HHR's OR place an order for a yellow and when the TOTAL national order gets to 5, GM will build them (that may prove nebulous).
This was discovered because he had 5 Granite 2008 Corvettes in the "sold" pen and I inquired about them....since it's a non-standard color for Corvette (and EXTREMELY nice looking, I might add). It seems an entire family ordered new Corvettes for a total of 34 and 5 were the non-standard color. He apologized because he could not reveal the name of the family (I do have a couple of guesses) or give the other circumstances.
Other than the quantity requirement, the only other caveats are....it must be a GM color, and GM has to approve the color for the specific model/line of vehicle.
So, get your orders in !!!!!!

If you order a semi-rare car to begin with like a Corvette, then get it in granite color for example, seems like a great investment. I can just see the dam thing at Barret Jackson in about 10 years or more collecting a ransom b/c of rarity. "This, Ladies and Gentlemen is one of a lot of five very rare 2008 Granite Corvettes known to exist. The bidding will begin at $$$!"
BTW, got any pics of these granite corvettes? I googled it but got some really weird results, there are no pics of granite colored vettes. and give us a hint of who you think this family is just for fun. that way you can say you never told us!

the only question i have about the process is, are the dealers aware of the 5-order thing? that's pretty neat you can do that.

Don't have any pictures, sorry......I refuse to carry a cell phone (although I might get by there again Friday, so we'll see).
Not sure if the 2008 Corvette, in 10 years, would be a collectors item because of the paint. To my knowledge, all were just the basic coupe options. MAYBE would carry an additional premium for the "custom" paint. But certainly not something in the Barrett-Jackson arena.
Without mentioning any names, I think the family that placed the large Corvette order is a prominent Mormon family, who have much exposure in the Phx. area, as well as the state. They have that many relatives (of driving age) just in the Phoenix/Mesa/Gilbert/Chandler area .

i was kinda kidding about that Barret Jackson thing.
half way kidding, half way not. Those auctions are amazing and if it was owned by a celebrity (prolly not in this case), the car might go for considerably more than what was paid for it. In other words it might not depreciate, only appreciate. who knows?
