VIN and engine S/N
Is there a way to find out if the engine in my 2008 HHR LT is the original? I ask because when I bought the car the CarFax report said "no accidents", but then after I found some repaired body damage the CarFax report magically changed. Now I am replacing a blown out front exhaust pipe and converter assembly, and I have found some evidence that it has been removed before. This evidence includes tool marks on the studs on the header, damaged gasket, bent heat shield etc. The pre-existing damage was basically both fenders and the hood had been removed at some point. I am getting pretty paranoid about other damage now, Oh yeah, this was a "Certified Pre-Owned" from a Chevy dealer. They have been doing what they can to make me happier, short of giving me money.

Not necessarily. I hit a Coyote with my Impala, and had a claim to repair that damage. When I went to trade the car in, the claim was not showing on Carfax. Carfax is only one tool. One must still look a vehicle over carefully. Colyanzu passed the carfax report, yet it still has damage from the front door being pushed into the front fender from some unknown incident with its previous owner.

did the dealer claim there was no accidents?
did they provide the carfax?
i think the carfax must be clean for a "certified vehicle"
you can claim fraud, tell them you want a replacement vehicle, i think the consumer laws are better after all the katrina car situations.

At this point I'm not even complaining about the Carfax, as I see it it's my own fault for not following my first impulse to walk and get a new vehicle from another dealer. I should know better than to buy a used car just to save a couple hundred bucks. I knew the sales mgr had lied about other things earlier in the day, like he said the price on the window sticker less GM incentives that is the deal, no other discussion HA!
I just want to walk in with proof that the engine has been replaced, not just suspicious marks on metal. Then I can really get them to backup, they've already acted scared.
