what is that light for?

I love the little convenience light. It dims with the panel dimmer, and I don't happen to like a bright dash, so keep it turned down about half. It not only lights up the window switches, it lights up the little cubby hole -- which I use for change and my bluetooth headset.

I wondered the same about mine. Maybe the light in my SS is different than the one talked about here. It's right in the middle of the roof, close to the windshield. It only comes on when the exterior lights are on. Not the daytime running lights, but all exterior lights. It's not bright enough to illuminate anything, so I think it's just an indicator, strange place to put it IMHO.

Yes its the light in the middle by the windshield, radio shack has some led bulbs others are getting them online, search led on here and see what comes up. They are very easy to change but there are two different ways to do it depending on if you have onstar or not ( I believe), I do not have it so all I had to do was take out the screw on the driver pillar and take off the visors and the headliner drops easily, do be careful as it can break if you pull too hard, reach your hand up behind and pull the clip towards the front and the light assembly comes out, pull the old led and put in new put the removed stuff in place and you are done.

Try this thread...if nothing else...it's rather entertaining.

hey guys -
This isn't to illuminate the window switches. It's there to illuminate the whole console - a little design creativity.
Think about it:
Why wire up a light on the headboard to back light switches on the console, when ALL the other switches on the console are backlit? There's no obsticle preventing them from being backlit. It was a design decision, and I don't think the light's there just to light the switches. It really adds to the feeling of the car.
