What are the lights on heater control knobs?

My 2 LT has something that I cannot understand. On the two larger heater control knobs (left and right), if you push on the knobs, a small indicator light appears on the knob itself. If you push knob again, this light goes off. I cannot see that anything different is occurring when knob is pushed, other than the small light, which is very small and does not illuminate anything.

Am I missing something?

If you push the left one it turns on and off your A/C. If you push the right one it turns on and off your rear window defroster.

Don't feel bad Fritz. One morning while I was freezing my a** off, I had to pull the owner's manual out to find out how to warm things up!

Yeah, this car keeps surprising me. I read here about the intermittent wipers going into full mode when going over 45 MPH. Sure enough, it is true. It is likely in the owners manual, but I must have glossed over it.
All in all a pretty well thought out car, though I do not look forward to changing headlights!
The HHR is the most enjoyable car we have had in a long while, at least for me. The wife still pines for the Vibe ( SHudder! ) but she also likes the Chevy

That just happened to me yesterday. I thought my wipers were tearing up. Blew my mind, and I thought I read the owners manuel cover to cover. Must now have.

I could not find anything in the owners manual about a rear window defroster.... i see the lines in the window... but have been puzzled about how to turn it on..... not that we really need it in SD... but was just wondering where it was at....

Rear Window Defogger
The rear window defogger uses a warming grid to
remove fog from the rear window.
The rear window defogger will only work when the
ignition is in RUN.
<(Rear): Press the button to turn the rear window
defogger on or off. Be sure to clear as much snow from
the rear window as possible. An indicator light below
the symbol will come on to let you know that the
rear window defogger is activated.
The rear window defogger will turn off approximately
15 minutes after the button is pressed. If turned on
again, the defogger will only run for approximately
seven minutes before turning off. If turned on again, the
defogger will only run for approximately seven minutes
before turning off. If vehicle speed is greater than 50 mph
(80 km/h) and the rear defogger is active, it will remain on
as long as the speed is greater than 50 mph (80 km/h).
The defogger can also be turned off by pressing the
button again or by turning off the engine.
Notice: Do not use anything sharp on the inside of
the rear window. If you do, you could cut or damage
the warming grid, and the repairs would not be
covered by your warranty. Do not attach a temporary
vehicle license, tape, a decal or anything similar to
the defogger grid.

Not trying to be "snarky", but the knobs have symbols on them. The left one has the AC symbol, and the right one has the rear window defroster symbol.

I had trouble at first figuring out where the rear window defrost button was too, but only because that did not seem like logical placement for it to me.
