I work in South Central LA, but prefer living in the OC.

You know, I'd probably suggest doing this for the 5th Annual Tom's Farm Show the first weekend in November. Should be our best one yet!

I am getting married the weekend before (in KY) and we WILL be back in time to shine up my baby and be at Tom's (honeymoon will be later).

So far you'd be the "came furthest" winner. August through the desert is brutal ...

Last trip from west coast to Ohio was just under 4 days in a 75 Dodge van pulling an 8' U-Haul....... "Rust never sleeps"
Why would anyone want to live in Ohio, had to go to Iniana and Chicago each year in December great weather.

I have taken the 40 from LA to Little Rock several times and it is a great drive. I usually do 12 hours the first day and 15 the second. The only issues I have had is road construction along the way. It will slow you down at times. There are some great old junk yards along the 40 too.

Also DO NOT SPEED in New Mexico! They got me last time through.

The best advise, IMO....

I made this trip over a dozen times in the past 8 years (counting both directions). Tried all different routes. With a small exception in routing (short cut) I agree.

However, I think you may be "pushing the envelope" with your time allowance/daily travel. 700 miles a day is tough if you plan on at least one stop (gas) and potty breaks. In my experience, each stop is at least 20-30 minutes. So you would be pushing 11-12 hours a day.....minimum.

Watch out for Oklahoma Highway Patrol and New Mexico Highway Patrol....they have NO TOLERANCE for ANY SPEEDING. And they are very good at setting speed traps. I probably need not say anything about CHP.

Oh, almost forgot.....I44 through Oklahoma where you pick up I40 in OKC is toll roads. Last year, they were about $2.00 each.

Is there a way to go that doesn't have tolls?

I would think looking at your girlfriend the whole way would be better than looking at Eric .....

Kev and Bonnie, she already denied coming along. She hates Cali because her ex jerk of a b/f lives there. In L.A. even. I respect her choice and am not going to force her to come when she doesn't want to.

Yes!!

I70 west from St. Louis. Kansas City pick -up US 169 south to US 54. Take US 54 west through Wichita and continue west to Tucumcari NM where you pick up I 40 west.

This is back country with very little traffic......a lot of VERY small towns and you may be able to overlook the posted speed limit (use your discretion). Make sure you plan for gas. Stations are available, but I used the larger towns and cities....Liberal, Dodge City, Wichita.

There are other ways to circumvent the toll roads.....using I 70, for example. But if you are trying to complete this trip as rapidly as you are suggesting, I would pay the $4.00 each way (2 toll roads, which are "tied" to I 40).

If you are worried about $8.00 you might want to reconsider making the trip in the first place.
