I had a thought that you could possibly mount or keep the unit in the storage area in the center of the dashboard.

seems like it would be easy enough to put one of these in there...

... and simply close the lid when not in use.

I use the Sony and it has never failed me, plus you can remove it in 5 seconds and place it in your pocket and still use it for 4 hours while hiking.

I use 2 different GPS units, depending on the "run".

A Garmin unit....don't know the model number, right now. And, software by DeLorme that runs on a lightweight and small laptop. I prefer the DeLorme only because you can do anything with it including drawing in your own roads, gas stations, resturants, and adding text and descriptions. Also, uses several different voices that you can select for prompts....which helps a "deaf" guy like me.

But, if anybody finds a portable unit with about a 10 inch diag. window, let me know. I would like to build in a nice looking unit for the top dash pocket.

Wouldn't that be nice for an aftermarket option?

Okay............straight up...............I'm thinking of buying my son a GPS for Christmas. He goes everywhere but always seems to be printing things out on Mapquest, etc. Now, I know that Garmin has been making them for a long time for public safety ( hand held units that were more for adventurers )and so forth, but how accurate are these new ones with the graphics, turn warnings, etc.? I mean, if they really aren't that great, why not stick with my old reliable Rand-McNally atlas?

The biggest advantage of GPA versus paper is that I can do a reroute quickly in case there is traffic jam/accident ahead. The GPS proved useful this summer while on vacation to detour me around 2 fatal accidents on the interstate highways.

Ditto. You would be surprised the fun you can have with a GPS. I go exploring on roads I would have never thought to go on before for fear of just not knowing how to get back somewhere. Sure you could just go back the way you came, but if you get far out there, why not find the short cut home?
