I have a question. These things are so small, how do you program what you want to do? Like your re-route, how do you get that info in there? We have been considering one, but I guess I haven't spent much time on it.

Most will re-route for you automatically as soon as you go "off course" from the original route.

As DaJOker said, most will do that automatically... you can also select detour from the menu.

OK, part of the question answered. How do you get the original info in there? I only see a couple of buttons on the front. Do you use zip codes or does it pull up some kind of menu that you scroll through to enter data??

Don't know about the newer GPS units by Garmin but, in the older model I have...what you see is what you get. It is NOT upgradeable for new roads, resturants, gas stations, etc.

The DeLorme software, on my other method, IS upgradable each year. I pay about $20 after rebates (not necessary unless you what new updates).

As far as using the unit and IT knowing where you are...it takes the GPS reading and loads the map of that current location. You can scroll through other locations to develop "waypoint" to "waypoint directions and map.

hmmm, i thought these GPS devices used an SD card that you insert into them and it has the maps on the card, reads the maps, gets your bearing with the satellite and works that way...
guess I was wrong about that.

Yes, mine (i3) has the MiniSD card. The Garmin i5 is preloaded with all US. And you can update via internet.
