Chevy might not yet, but HVROD is building a Panel SS:
"I"ve been patiently waiting for my New 2008 Panel..... (yes, I will have two then )
I will be building it up to my version of a HHR SS model....
Which the GM director stated, must have stopping power, cornering , accleration... to be classified as an SS.... But no worries , I won't be badging it as an SS... As soon as I get it... I will remove all badges on it..."

There are a lot of Panel hot rods, true, but is GM going to build a rocketsled that goes 150+mph with such limited visibility out the sides and back? The suspension is beefed up for spirited handling for... a work truck? Nope, I don't see it. Can you imagine trying to whip thru traffic with such big blind spots?
Not that I don't like the idea of a Panel SS. What a unique vehicle to own. But contrary to popular belief, GM is in the business to make money and SKU's are costly to create, you better sell a ton of them to make a profit.

If anyone is so hot to have an HHR SS Panel, there are FAR easier ways to skin that cat, while also gaining a nice boost in versatility over the standard Panel configuration as well.
Unless I'm way off, all it would require is hanging a pair of Panel rear doors and rear quarter panels on the SS. My guess is that such a mod could be had for less than $2K out the door, and much less if there's any market for the original doors, panels, and their fittings and interior panels. There's even more to be saved if one goes salvage for the parts rather than their local GM parts counter. One could even opt for an AA5 look for about $1,000 I figger.
Minus the dedicated storage, this would also provide a flexible-use vehicle, something entirely suited for the uses a normal Panel would, while also adding the option of seating two additional passengers if necessary. To be honest, the restriction of NEVER being able to carry more than 2 passengers was the primary reason I opted for a Wagon, rebates and incentives aside.
The notion is something I've been considering for my '07 2LT Wagon. Having nabbed the $2K incentive, it was a much better (or at least a less egregious) value proposition than ordering the '08. Hang a pair of 20" LCD's where the windows used to be and wire 'em to a pinhole camera, and you've even got something for the passengers to look at besides the back of the driver's head. (Just kidding)
Seriously though, if at the end of the day, I'd be able to net out at around $1,500 to do the entire conversion, it's someting I'd seriously consider. It's not a job that takes a tremendous amount of body shop finesse (essentially just a standard finish using factory paint, hanging the panels true, and aligning all the interior kit properly) and since it call all be painted at once, I can't imagine having a hard time finding a capable bodywork professional or that it would be more than a few hours' labor. Then again, this is all entirely top-of-my-head thinking, and reality prove to be something quite different.
Or am I just nuts?

I would trade my panel for an SS panel. I have many ask me about the SS panel when they see my panel. There would be a LOT of buyers for an SS panel. Half or better of panel buyers buy them for personal use, most of us would rather have the SS, but want the cool factor of the panel. I agree buying a SS then converting into a panel makes sense, but I seen a sunburst orange panel conversion on Ebay, an the paint didn't match at all. Very hard color to match because of the metallic. Since I like (and have) a sunburst orange, I'll only get rid of my panel if and when Chevy makes a Panel SS. LS
