Winter Rim/Tire Size, Brakes and Warranty: Basic Questions

Well, I've got about 35,000km's on my 2006 HHR and have really enjoyed first time new vehicle ownership thus far. As winter is just about upon us for another year I had a few basic questions that I hope you experts can answer.

My HHR LT has the stock 17" wheels. The stock Firestones are really worn down and I don't trust them for another winter. So, for the first time in my life I'm looking at buying winter tires and rims. The confusion lies with the tire/rim sizing. As far as I can see I can get either 205/60/16's or go down to 205/65/15's for new rims/tires with minimal affect on the speedometer reading. What I'd like to know is whether you guys feel I should go with the 15's instead of the 16's and what difference in the ride and feel of the vehicle would I notice, if any, compared to the 17" tires.

Also, over the course of my HHR ownership there are a few things that I need to address with respect to warranty work. I need to have the recalled side pillar protective pieces installed as well as having the rattling headliner addressed. I also believe that my rotors are warping as I do feel an intermittent pulsing when braking at times. (Sometimes accompanied by a slight rattling sound when braking. ). Is making an appointment required for warranty work? Would the braking issue even be covered by the warranty? Is there anything else warranty related that I should have looked at?

I'm looking forward to your replies, especially on the tire/rim sizing issue. Thanks in advance!

215/55-16 for winter tires

All the things you listed should be covered under warranty.

Thanks! I guess going from 17" rims down to 15" wheels would be too much of a drop, huh.

Regarding warranty work: is there any sort of diagnostic charge associated with it (eg. fee for checking the brakes/determining what work needs to be done) like when you take a vehicle that no longer is covered by a warranty to be looked at? I've never owned a new vehicle before and don't know what to expect.

Thanks for your help!

When I had my rotors turned there was no fee. As long as they're actually warped you shouldn't have to pay anything.
