Wooly worms , spring cleaning , mpg gains

52000 on my 08 2.4 auto panel 2lt , time to put in napa gold air filter , and remove that wooly worm thing that goes from the fenderwell to the air cleaner housing. my old gm filter did not look to bad. it did have some sand in it. i wonder if the previous owner drove to the beach alot and or went through a sand storm?? there was also some sand on top of the valve cover.i haven't noticed any sand anywhere else. it sounds alot deeper note on acceleration. my mpg has increased by at least 2 mpg. i only drove 1 trip so far , 275+ miles when i fill up in the mourning. i will also be able to check mpg on paper. i am going by the dic dash thingy now. it was 50 deg out this mourning , and this made tire psi go up from 40 to 42. i do not think the filter was that dirty. it could be the napa gold filter , but i believe the removal of that wooly worm thing was the main cause of my increase.- EDIT- filled up this mourning.calculated mpg on paper with calulator , 26.8 mpg. but my dic dash thingy reads 29.2 mpg. i don't think my dic is keeping up because i am always flooring it now , to see how it sounds , and to try to compare the power. my dic is constently reading higher mpg now since i removed the wooly worm. i use the same gas pump everyday , i set the gas handle filler on med/slow while i go in to get coffee. when i come back it has cut off. i don't "click" it anymore. it could be the gas pump , but i do not think so.

That's how your engine gets cold air. Without the "wooley worm" the filter housing will get warmer air from the engine compartment which will reduce HP and possibly mileage. This may not be evident until you get some warmer weather. Also, it really doesn't add much restriction.

maybe

but so far it seems to be doing great without it. i won't throw it away just yet. i have an old aluminum aftermarket cold air pipe. i am trying to see if i can retrofit it in place of the woolyworm.
