World's Best Kept Auto Secret !!

I stand corrected on two assertions I made in this thread. First - the fuel filler is NOT always opposite the exhaust outlet on single exhaust cars. Just mostly. And I said that I "believed" it was Federal Law. In fact, it's not even a NIST standard practice. My "belief" stemmed from the incorrect assumption that the gas filler was required to be opposite the exhaust outlet. I figured that such a restriction would have to be codified to force auto makers into compliance. Otherwise, they would be free to place the gas filler anywhere that the design dictated it should be placed.
No one wants to build an unsafe vehicle - it's not good for business. Apparently, the relative positions of the exhaust outlet and the gas filler inlet are not safety considerations. In fact, dual exhausts, which are plentiful, obliterate such a contention.
Still....a lot of people are puzzled about why the gas filler is on one side or the other.
Me and my big mouth....

That one worked on 3 out of 4 of my gm cars the first one was 2 for 2 the only one that was 4 out of 4 was the one where the exhaust was opposite the gas cap.

Unfortunately, your theory isn't always true. On my Honda Odyssey, the gas cap is on the Driver's side but the gas pump hose on the dash board is on the right side. Oh well...
