Would you buy...

WELL, I made the trip to look at the HHR today and when I got there, they told me it was going to auction in a couple hours. So I asked what they were hoping to get for it so maybe I could throw an offer at them. The tool who was taking it said they usually get more than they have it on the lot for! Sure, I'm an idiot who is buying his first car...
Here's what kills me... I made them an offer, they said; "We're close" and gave me a counter-offer of $250.00 above mine. With that, I decided to walk and see if they would accept my price haveing left my name and phone number just in case, and for $250.00, they lost a potential customer.
No phone call, nothin'... Is the market that good or am I stupid for not hagglin more? I was only $750.00 under the asking price to begin with!?#$@

No you're not stupid the dealership is. They are not getting asking price at auction or else they wouldn't buy at auction and then sell them because they wouldn't make any money. Keep shopping eventually you will find the right one.

I would not pay that much for a rental. there are too many non rentals out there for less if you shop around.
A Friend bought a LT2 with everything but Leather for $12,500 and it only had 10,000 miles.
The Rentals for the most are ok and are maintained. Just too often they are driven in anger and beat hard. There are too many You Tube video's of rentals doing things I would never want done to a car I buy.
The simple fact is the market is flooded with HHR's and if you take your time you will find the right one at the right price.

I really appreciate the encouraging replys, however I must say I am getting frustrated with these dealers who want top dollar and say they only have $1000.00 of flexibility in the price! Maybe I should shop Ford? NOT!!!!!
I'm calling GMs general manager dangit...
Oh well, back to searching.

Be calm
Don't be rushed...but be sure to check all sources, not just dealers. Consider widening your search area. My 2LT came from 400 miles away, girlfriend's was driven over 1000 miles for delivery. We were both fixated on the extremely rare combination of a loaded 2LT with a MANUAL transmission. Mine came from a used car lot, hers from a private party on this forum. Neither was purchased from a Chevrolet dealer. The one cool thing is we didn't have to consider a former rental car!
