2005 Vette vs SS

Interesting comparison. I did some 40 to 90 mph roll-ons side by side with a 2005 Corvette (base, auto, Borla exhaust, otherwise stock). (On a private road). We were within 1/2 car length every time, just depending on driver reaction. 3rd gear for me, couple of variants for the Vette that made no difference. My SS has the Hahn/BSR tune otherwise stock. Looking at the specs, the Vette is certainly faster 0-60 although we didn't try that and I am sure that would be true with me driving anyway. Not sure if I am surprised or not.

i found doing 40mph roll ons is not a good number for the ss. if you do 40mph rolls, brake boosting is your friend. i do 20's and 60's. 1st gear 20 and 2nd gear 60's. 40 rolls, i bog and lag is horrible.

I'm a bit surprised, but kind of not

The HHR SS does not seem very quick 0-60 and is very traction-limited (at least with stock tires on the street). But from a roll, the wide, flat torque curve means instant acceleration and it feels quicker than the 260 advertised horses (I'm still stock, but really want a tune!). I haven't come across a Vette, but I've more than kept up with cars like an Acura CL-S, Altima SE-R, RSX-S, Infiniti G35, and MazdaSpeed 3. A newer Mustang GT (probably auto) got me by just a car length from a 30-70 mph roll.

Now that it's winter and always raining here, Toyota Corollas beat me off the line. Just breathing on the throttle gives me wheelspin. I'm looking forward to the GM tune and dry roads and coming across another Mustang GT

What about new tires instead of a tune? If you're spinning now, you're just going to spin easier after the tune. Improved wet traction will increase not only acceleration, but also braking and cornering performance. And GM will never be able to claim tires caused engine or transmission damage voiding your warranty.

You'll be leaving those Corollas in the dust (er - mud) in no time.

they can say you were racing and not cover you. Might get away with a blown trans once, maybe twice.

But I wouldn't exactly go rolling up to the dealer with slicks on lol

Course then again i'm a V8 RWD guy, so I don't plan to race the SS, nor do I know how well it'll hold up

this FWD stuff is all weird

Still LOVE my SS though

Well honestly, I take it easy when the roads are wet most of the time, so I'm not too worried about traction off the line when it's raining. It is weird getting wheel spin in 3rd gear from a roll though

In the dry, traction is really only an issue in 1st gear, though I suspect after a tune, 2nd gear might be interesting too.

I can't imagine hanging in there with a Corvette in my little red breadwagon

That is interesting, mine seems really strong (no bog) at 40, in fact 3rd gear is the perfect passing gear every time for me. I have had the tune for a long time now, so I can't remember if stock was different in that regard.

x2....as well as 50 rolls....mine is an auto and at 50 it is more than a turd, from a dig its not all that hot either...best from what I have found out is from 15 -20 roll...even with the auto it will still chirp the tires....

on a side not was the Vette an auto or 6 speed?

what gear were you in??? i know people don't like to talk about street racing on here, but oh well....what were you running??? i tried the 40 roll when i was stock against a stage 2 cobalt sc and he left me by like a car and i couldn't make it up. the same result with the tune going against faster cars.

Well, first no street racing, a friend has a nice 2 lane driveway leading into their large ranch, so that makes it very easy to do a lot of legal perf evaluations. You have the same setup (tune), and I'll certainly agree that it is pulling much stronger at 50 than 40 in 3rd, I just don't feel the "bog" that was mentioned, although we were accelerating up to 40, so already had about 8 psi boost when going to full throttle. As many have stated, it is much faster to use 2nd for optimum 40-90, but we were just interested in single gear roll-ons 'cause we started the conversation about how much mid-range torque the SS had for a little motor. BTW, looked at the specs for a 2005 Corvette Auto, does the 1/4 in 12.95 at 109 or so, we are not quite there, but close enough with the tune that my side-by-side comparo does "make sense" after all.
