Anyone ever get a puff of black smoke on takeoff?

Anyone ever get a puff of black smoke on takeoff?

My 09 is an auto and the other day I got in it and when it hit second,it shot out a puff of black smoke. A friend saw it happen. Happen to anyone else?

I think it's pretty common. Something to do with the direct injection I think. I know you will see a puff of smoke upon startup if you look closely.

Its especially noticeable if its cold on take off, let your car warm up a bit before flogging it.

Yes I saw the same thing happen when what looked like a 2LT try to merge on the Merritt Pkwy in CT. The kid gunned it (he must've been a lot jockey swapping cars w/ another dealer, the HHR had dealer plates on it and the OEM sticker in the window still) and you saw a big cloud of black smoke come out of the tailpipie.

I do see a "puff" sometimes when it's cold, but never something that could be characterized as a "cloud".

Well, I would have to say it is normal; my exhaust tip is BLACK after just a few hours of drivin' What about you? Turbo has a lot do with that along with direct injectors.

yeah, that's pretty normal LNF behavior. run rich on start-up, plus being DI, nothing to be concerned about.
