bow tie emblem
Hey guys --want to change my ratty looking gold emblem on the hatch & grill to a black one -- But I want the chrome frame around it --
Question --what Ive seen on the internet is solid black ( no chrome frame ) Does the colored part separate ffrom the frame when you take it off. where I could reuse the stock chrome frame -
thanks in advance --Will -- Also in removal , is a heat gun a good tool -- heard some comments about using fishing line ?

Tape the chrome area off, sand and prep the gold part and paint it you choice of colours.
You can use nylon line to cut the adhesive tape , then remove all the residue off both parts, sand and prep and paint the gold plastic piece, apply 3M double sides molding tape, and restock the newly painted bow tie, allowing time for tge paint to fully cure so you don’t leave finger prints in the fresh paint.
This red rear bowtie, now resides on the BlackSwan’s tailgate it was masked and sprayed in the car, liven that rear bumper, Bob was a stylish HHR, sadly written off after a rear end collision

For my front one, I used fake carbon fiber vinyl wrap. Not sure I will go that route again, as I don't know how long it's going to last in the elements:

This is not SS specific. I have done several. Sometimes they fall off. Some I carefully taped off and painted in place because it seemed like less trouble.
Next time I will just degrease really well, shoot a prime coat with whatever leftover “sticks to plastic” rattle can I have lying around, fill any chips (almost certainly present on the front) and finish with wheel paint. I have some leftovers of that too. Krylon finishes beautifully but is a little weak in the durability department, especially for the front.
If GM had some shame they would replace these free. I remember seeing some of these things looking like crap when less than three years old.
