Both sticks. The Corvettes really shine with the manual. The HHR SS would be better on the highway if it had another gear, its a bit revved up at 70.
But I didn't buy the HHR SS to replace a vette, I bought it to replace a Tahoe getting 11.5 mpg city.

Yes this is true....BUT. the fuel economy measurments changed since 2003, your corvette (and my fathers 2003 convertible) would be rated NOW at 17-26.

And when you add in the fact that you guys ( you and my dad) have a six speed, I feel better about our (you and me) HHR SS.

On my worst (non-traffic jam/accident) city driving , I can average 28+.
Usually i can get 29.5-30 depending on the wind.

My highway starts at 32mpg, and on low wind non-west virginia endless hills i can get 36.

My Memorial day weekend untill today consisted of cleveland to pittsburgh (monroeville), pittsburgh to cleveland, cleveland to niagara falls, niagara falls to cleveland, cleveland to ligoneer PA, and then back to cleveland. The remainder of those 1000 miles were all city. i was using 87 octane on both tanks because I wanted to report to this forum my findings. I was driving 60-63 the entire way, running the sunroof on vent, no a/c 35psi tires after highway warm up, 3 passengers plus luggage= 625 extra pounds.

the verdict 33.2 miles per gallon hand calculated, 32.5 DIC readout.
LOL, I was suprised, i thought my 4000 pound hhr would do much worse.

I love the vette, seriously Its so good for the money i don't know how they ever sell porsche, lambo, and ferrari. But that 350HP 5.7 can't sip the fuel like our SS.

Hang on there... you're claiming the above numbers in an HHR SS? Is it on a flatbed? Or are you actually driving it? If the latter, I'd like to see a snapshot of the DIC. Otherwise, either I've got a hole in my tank, or the wind you're talking about may not be atmospherically induced

LOL, very funny. I have 5 speed HHR SS, keep the boost at at-or-below -10 whenever possible, 87 octane is all that is required, 35-37 highway pressure tires, 60 max on the highway, 5th gear by 33mph in the flats, coast to the reds because they will still be red when you get there. Coast any downhills where you probably have to use your brake at the bottom or any highway hills where in neutral you will maintain 60mph.

Do that and you will see 28+ city, 32+ on the highway

BTW, I don't draft semi's cause the rocks don't play, I don't turn my car off at redlights becasue they are so short, and i don't subscribe to any other "advanced" hypermilling tricks. All I do is simply what I stated above.

Doesn't sound like very enjoyable driving, but I'll give it a try some weekend to see if I can get similar short-term results. As of now (and I'm driving considerably more aggressively... walking sounds more agressive than your strategy above ), but am at 22.x lifetime (3 weeks)... I also sit in traffic during morning commutes.

I burn fuel sometimes, i was heading north of 125mph and my hapless passengers asked "T, what year are we going too". So I let of the pedal at 130.
