Hydramatic 4T45 Tranny Specs
Here is the tranny specs for the SS Auto. GM claims the gearbox is rated to 325 ftlbs of TQ. If GM rates it at 325 ftlbs then it would deffinately hold 400 ftlbs of torque. Always remember MFG's always underate to be on the safe side.
This below are the 2005 Specs there have been upgrades in the 2008 that make it stronger and more reliable.

I've posted this many times, the SS A4 has two torque ratings. One at the input shaft and one at the output shaft. The 325 lb/ft is the MULTIPLIED maximum torque rating at the OUTPUT shaft. The maximum torque at the input shaft is 221 lb/ft, what the SS LNF engine is limited to for A4 vehicles.
A4 Specs below:

Furthermore, GM states specifically this transmission is a direct carryover from 2007. No changes were made internally to accommodate use in the HHR SS. This is the same hardware as the Cobalt, etcetera with a different transmission calibration.
Start adding power to your automatic SS and see where the limit's are.

I found this I hope thi is correct.
The transmission has a torque capacity
of 280 lb·ft (380 N·m) and shift
speeds up to 7000 rpm.

Absolutely correct Snoopy! The only reference in that document from November '05 to the 4T45 are the changes to the Saturn Vue Green Line to improve the torque impulse when the vehicle changes between hybrid and gasoline engine mode.

The fact that GM had to detune the A4 application is troubling in my mind. This means that they are only comfortable giving the 100,000 mile / 5 year warranty to this power level. It also in my mind removes any safety margin that modders are used to in high performance vehicles.
I think GM may have jumped the gun in offering this car in Automatic trim. It only has 4 gears, it is detuned, and it doesn't have a manumatic feature. Should have been HHR Sport.
