Had the same issue with my Merkur xR4TI....It was a rather rare car back in the day. Saw one in Mount Vernon Illinois one day and stopped to talk to the owner/doctor. He put a hitch on his and pulled it 50 miles. The turbo was GLOWING RED when he got home! I told him to look at his owner's manual.....

So far, this is the only plausible reason in this thread...

I have the auto and havnt had any problems..800#bike on a 1200# rated trailer...pulled 27 mpg and no heat problems....press/vac gage didnt react any different then unloaded....but then I wasnt hammering on it....and drive with a feathered foot, while doing at least the speed limit. But thats me....its all on you what you want to do.
But I have to add, Ive driven big rigs for a few years and part of that was driving for milage by using the boost gage, so its a natural for me to not overload it.

Love the Pic of "Panelmoxie" with what looks like a little teardrop! That is my dream trailer plus little utility for brush etc rather than stuffing in the back of the HHR and possible light boat trailer - I ve got a long delayed boat project in the garage. My SS is the daily driver including dump runs, kayak on the roof several times a week (high roof not an advantage for that duty), building materials etc. And it is an economy car unless I want to stand on it. I experimented with trying to get the max out of it on last tank which included throwing it around a little on a winding 15 mile road with a 1000' altitude gain and averaged 31.5 MPG per onboard calc. so far. I'm just getting comfortable with the car - just reached 3,000 miles yest. and entering 3rd month of ownership.
