oil! again.lol
i know this probaly has been posted before. i wanted to see what you guys think about what the dealer service dept told me. i got a letter from my dealer, it was a discounted oil change for 30 bucks, it stated that my last oil change was at 3600 miles and i should be due for another soon. yes and no, yes im now sitting at 6500 mile and no cuz the oil life still say 65% life. i called the dealer and aksed what i needed to do to stay not void my warranty, he told me i go by the oil life display and my warranty would be fine. but he recommended not to go more than 5k miles no matter what it showed. is this a standard practice for the SS? im pretty sure i read in the manual it should be done at 3k.

I use Mobile-1 5W-30 Extended life, K&N Oil Filters.
I have a big white board in my garage where I mark down mileage and date of last oil changes on all my vehicles, and lawn equipment etc.
I change mine every 4K, and reset the counter at each oil change.
I have K&N Air intake, and swap with another I have cleaned and oil'ed every other oil change. Never trust the counter, just reset it.

You can trust the % reading as it really works. GM did not just put it there for fun.
Also Syn oil will prolong the life of you engines oil as it will take much much more abuse than regular oil and is very durable to high temps.
The fact is even with normal oil most of us change it too often for all the harder we drive. If you do not operate in extreem heat or dirty conditions even regular oil can go twice what most of us have been changing it at.
Todays engine are so improved and the oils have become more durable [unless your breaking in a cam] you can extend your times with no problems.
Just follow GM recomendations as they do not want to have to deal with warranty issues anymore than you want to have them. They havew given very safe guide lines and if you follow them you will have years of a great running engine.
I have not made it to a oil change yet but expect the SS will show some where between 6,000-8,000 miles. I assume the Turbo heat may make them come a little sooner than my GTP. The GTP can go 7,000-8,000 easy with just city driving. Highway miles will extend change mileage.

Now that i have the SS(and believe the oil life monitor is pretty much on the money ) i just changed the SS's oil the first time last week (8500+ miles= 27% oil life left). A vehicle on non-syn oil , i prob woulda done going on 3 oil changes by now, so between the longer life of the Mobil1 and following the oil life monitor, that brings the cost of the Mobil1 down to about what non-syn oil woulda been.(that's what i tell myself when i bought my 1st change of Mobil1 LOL)

If the meter was counter productive to the HHR they would not offer it with the drivetrain warranty they offer.
A lot of old ideas have gone by the side over the years but some still cling to them even with all the advancements we have had.
60 years ago it was nothing to rering an engine before 80,000 miles and tires did not give you 10,000 miles.
