Oil change

I'm going to change my oil here in a few days, and I have a question. I picked up a few oil filters from the Chevy dealership, and I npticed none of them had any rubber O rings with them. are there any O rings or gaskets that need to be replaced when changing the oil filter?

Only a very few filters come with the new o-ring. I've changed my oil twice now, and both times I've removed the o-ring, cleaned it, applied a thin film of clean oil and replaced.

you mention an o ring, where is it located. In the cap or the housing?

Both..small one one the bottom of the filter..large one on the cap...the one in question is on the cap as the filter comes with the small one.If your relatively new, I wouldn't worry about the cap unless its noticably damaged, if your a few years old, change it.Purlator comes with the new o rings and its a fine filter( and priced right!). As said..some come with new ones some don't.

The o-ring presses into a channel in the cap. There really is no reason why you would damage it unless it is allowed to dry out and it pulls apart when removing the cap. If it is cleaned and given a new coat of oil before replacing, it should hold up fine. Now, after a handful of changes, I plan to replace mine as a preventative maintenance item. I'll simply buy a filter that comes with an o-ring and take care of it that way.
