Sounds like demand is higher than supply right now.

Is it an SS model? If it is then the base price on those is $22,995. We have been looking at getting our second HHR and hubby LOVES the SS model. Cheapest we have seen is $25,240 and most expensive is $25,930!

That dealer is smoking crack. You shoud get one for well under $24k - a tweaked out auto. Keep shopping and haggling. If they added stripes, that's their loss. You just want to haggle from the base MSRP...everything else is dealer fluff which they can take the hit on.

My twinked out version set me back 21.9k after rebate haggling. MSRP was 25.9k. All said and done it came to ~23.8 once you add in taxes and other expenses....and if they give you a dealer fee over $125 you should bust them over the coals on that price too.

The "market adjustments" are a way the dealer screws over a niave customer. Whenever a new model or a particulatly popular model come out, many dealers try to add an ADP (added dealer profit) fee to that model. PT cruisers were notorious for that gimmick when they first come out. Only those customers who just have to have the latest car are "dumb" enough to pay that fee.

I always figured that the least price for a new car is 90% of the sticker price as there are so many mark ups tacked on to the price of a car and manufactuers hold backs to the dealer.

I did see many fully loaded HHRs on the dealer lots (in '06) that had $24-26K on them. All too many markups on the options are way out of line.IMHO.

It all depends on what you want, keeping in mind that the dealer wants to maximize the profit he makes, so they will charge whatever they can get out of you.

Jeez thats pretty steep I think. My sticker price was $23,185 for manual, performance seat, no sunroof, 7 speaker with XM, and limited slip. Plus I got $2,000 worth of rebates on top of that :)

hmmm. I always try to get the exact invoice price of the car and then go from there, which dealer in the area will charge the least for my options, color, etc.
normally Edmunds.com will give you an invoice price, but some of the options available on the HHR SS are not on their checklist for optional equipment for some reason. But you could get a really close invoice if you dont want the performance seat and there is one other option they dont show, cant remember which.
There's gotta be other dealers in your area willing to work with you, just call around
