re
auto here also...prolly around 21 - 25 around town
i drive the SS hard - you have to in south florida or you'll get run over
I95 ramps are my dragstrip - i haul a lot of music equipment so the auto was the best choice for me for a smoother ride
i havent had any issues since i've had it and it has 56k on it now - next oil change and i will service it

Autos are'nt all that bad, when driven hard. They put the power down pretty consistant, and are a little easier to hook up the power.
After a track day[see "Goodguys" autocross post in this section] I can safely say, "easier to drive on a autocross track'" than a 5 speed[Manually shifted means more prone to driver error].
It's really all about what "Rocks your Boat", and what you intend to do with it. Being a long time manually shifter guy, I sure have changed my tune. Auto's are happening. "Moon"

re
rob - no sir...its silver - in fact since i've had this thing (about 2 months now)
i havent seen another SS on the road down here yet!! - kinda surprised about that...i had a bright yellow blazer xtreme i traded for this - never saw one of those either down here for 2 years!!
i commented on your f-body recently because i'm still in love with those cars and sold my 2001 T/A WS6 (which was black) and am still kicking myself for that
i have my eye on a 2002 camaro SS up in Pompano that is 1 owner - but i want to tweak the HHR some - so many cars so little $$$$

The family likes to go to the track every weekend, and if I had a dime for every time someone missed second gear I'd be a very rich man. I can't tell you how many times someone misses then ends up blowing their run against lesser cars.
Oh, it's an auto, we run high eight's and low-low nines on the 1/8 mile usually between 82-84MPH consistently. The guys we play with never run that consistently with their manuals.

In 1985 bought a new 1986 5 speed 4 cyl TurboCoupe T-Bird and it is still running with over 250k miles. The limited research on the vehicle at that time seemed to indicate for reliability and performance the 5 speed was the way to go. Car gave me such enjoyable and good service, I couldn't buy an auto HHR SS.
Even in my old age, I still love driving and shifting, even in the city plus the occasional challenge a 5 sp presents on hills where there is a stop sign or traffic light.
On a recent 1300 mile or so road trip, mileage was over 32 and around our rural community usually 25-26.

Love the auto, ya you lose 25 hp, big deal. Still has lots of power. The 5 speeds have had more problems in the past anyway. Especially 2008. I prefer cruising and enjoying the day. If the SS had 400 hp or more, then I would go with a 5 speed.
