Ooooops miles per HOUR lol the closest track to me is only 1/8. I've never ran the 1/4. I misplaced the time slip so I can't give you the the exact 60' or mph. But I know it was between 80-83 mph.

Fastest mph for me in the 1/8 was 86.5mph. Biggest gain for me after tune was a catless dp.

How I went about upgraded... The day I bought the car, I went to my local parts store, and tried three k&n filters till I found one that worked. Forget part number 615..something for the cobalt ss. The one for the hhr didn't exist yet. I then got the gmtu right after my b to b warranty ended. Good solid 55HP increase is extremely noticeable. I then added h and c ic pipes, this allowed a much quicker spool up, and more umph in the bottom. Dp and exhaust added around another 20HP maybe a little more. That improvement was felt in the higher RPMs, it would get there just that much quicker, and overall engine response was better. especially when dropping into a passing gear above 80. The way this motor moves air is its key ability for making huge amounts of power. Saab made somethings perfect our ecotecs are an example of this, and GM took what they liked during their two years in ownership, so we have some of the highest HP per cubic motors evermade for a production car, that has a crazy amount of extremely sophisticated engineering by a group of people known for building cutting edge fighters. Although admittedly most of their cars were extremely safe crap.

Slow day for me, lots of free time, so I thought I would throw my hat in the ring on this manual vs auto debate.
First off, it is a proven fact that all things being equal[H.P.-torque curve-traction-driver skill and reaction time] that a auto, will put the power down smoother, and more efficently that a clutch only manual.Clutch only, manually operated trans cars, tend to shock the driveline at the hit, and a lot harder than a auto , and will break traction easier, due to abrupt power delivery. This in turn over time leads to more wear and tear, and possible breakage of drivetrain parts. With a auto, it's brake load the convertor, drop the hammer and go, if you have the traction.
Clutch only, manually shifter cars, are old school, and outdated in todays enviroment, unless you are the type that gets your jollies off, grabbing gears.
For some daily driven cars, this is fine, but at the track, whole different ballgame. Take a stroll through the pits and see what the heavy hitters run, for trans.
All the quick and fast cars, that run consistantly, run some sort of convertor type trans or a computer controlled clutch, to be able to make run after run, consistancly. A driver of a clutch only, manually shifted car, cannot hit his shift points, on the money time after time, no matter how good he thinks he is. A computer controlled auto trans, hits it's marks on the money, time after time, no problem.
In our fairly limited platform it will be intresting to follow some of the manual guys, that are throwing all kinds of H.P. and torque, into their manually shifted cars. Intresting to see if they can hook it, and just how long the weak links will last, and if they will cop to a large parts breakage bill, for going over the edge.
For my application, I'm making about all the H.P.-torque that I can safely hook up on the street, so I'm happy where I'm at. I've also got the handling about as good as I can get within reason, for the times I autocross. Oh, did I mention: Many v8's have felt the sting of the SS.
After almost three years, I still get the large *hit eateing grin, when I bust it off, almost daily. SS is sweet car. "Moon"

I have to agree.

While you can not give a blanket statment here technology has made it to where the Auto powered cars are as fast or faster than most manuels. The new Camaro and even the Turbo Solstice were both as fast as the manuals.

Racers have found ways to make the auto as fast and the simple fact more consistant also adds to the use of them in drag racing.

The semi auto trannys in Ferrari street cars and most F1 cars today are all faster. The trannys can shift so much faster than an manual.

In the case of the HHR the manuel will still be a little faster due to the power being down.

There are positives and negitives to either. There is no right or wrong here. Some like to shift and some don't I love to shift if it is a weekend play car but after a long say at work and fighting rush hour trafffic across town I don't feel like driving let alone shifting.

The one real negitive anymore is if you own a manual non performance car it can be damn difficult to sell the car. Too few non performance people can shift anymore but on the other hand odds are it will never get stolen since most thieves can drive a stick.

I know I'm a little late to the party here, but wanted to give you some quick info. I'm running a 2010 SS manual with a GMTU, and different tires (BFGoodrich KDW2) only. Otherwise it's completely stock. My last time at the track I ran 14.20 @ 100mph, and I am by no means the fastest shifter here.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to break into the 13's with just the GMTU and a good launch if you're an auto. My shifting and horrible launches probably account for at least 0.2 seconds during the run.

Quick Reply: SS auto ?
