Towing with an SS

I know it's not an SS but I towed with my Kia Soul (2.4l Auto) And the book pretty much was the same as the SS. (Not recommended to tow etc) but had a tow weight rating of around 1200lbs.
I only towed a small 5x8 trailer and a riding lawn mower and the rest of the time was wood or dry wall and it did ok but even that poor little 2.4 struggled under the heavier loads. I only went around town like from Lowes to home etc.

Thanks for all the advice ! I have given up on the towing and teardrop camper plan.
I am going to put an interior in my '74 Econoline 200. It's mechanically sound, has a few rust issues, rides good ,PS PB but no AC. And the drawback is 13-15 MPG. But it looks cool and has plenty of room. I have had it to Kansas City, Northern Mich, and Illinois several times to the Van Nationals .
