Question What Fuel's best for the SS

Hello Everyone,
I'm new to the HHR world, I hope to be ordering my new SS tomorrow 03/24/08...

I don't know where I heard that the SS need's to use Mid Grade Fuel or higher and should not be run on regular unleaded? Can someone set the record for me.
Thanks..............

Hello and welcome to the forum. I would say that you should use nothing but the best in an SS because of the turbo. In fact, on the regular HHR, the owners manual suggests using 91 or higher on the 2.4. I'm sure some of the SS owners will chime in and let you know what they use and/or what the manual recommends.

You should run premium (91 to 93) to get the maximum advantage of the available boost and optimum ignition timing for best performance. Midgrade won't damage the engine, as the knock sensor will retard timing. (This is the short version answer).

Agree, premium for the SS.

If you look closely at the EPA Mileage ratings for the HHR SS, you will notice that they were done on Regular gas. The EPA testing for the HHR 2.4 was done on Premium.

My dealer fills all new cars with Regular, so whether you buy a Corvette or an HHR 2.4, or HHR SS, it comes filled with regular gas.

The HHR SS runs fine on Regular, and the computer is designed to handle that, but for max performance you should use Premium.

Interesting observation ralphb. Where did you determine that, the window sticker? Just curious.

BTW - did my first long distance almost all highway trip today. Mostly cruise controlled driving set between 68 to 75 MPH and I'm absolutely shocked at the gas mileage I got. I was hauling just under 300 pounds of canvas boat cover in the back and I got almost 35MPG!!!! (34.6 actual fill and calculate)

My little red SS continues to amaze me every day....
