Do I need to change the solenoids as a set? I replaced the cam shaft sensor today then got codes P0016 and P0017, cam/crank position correlation sensor A and Sensor B - Bank1. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as I`m going on a 700 mile road trip in about 2 weeks.

No, the solenoids don't need to be replaced as a set. However, you aren't indicating anything that makes the Solenoids suspect.

I gather you replaced the cam shaft POSITION sensor, yet are still getting the P0016/17 - have you reset the codes to turn off the MIL? If not, you need to do that.

If you are gettting P0016 and P0017, you better go read - http://www.obd-codes.com/p0016.

As it says, the Causes may include:

Timing chain stretched, or timing belt skipped a tooth due to wear
Misalignment of timing belt/chain
Tone ring on crankshaft slipped/broken
Tone ring on camshaft slipped/broken
Bad crank sensor
Bad cam sensor
Damaged wiring to crank/cam sensor
Timing belt/chain tensioner damaged

Note: we have a timing CHAIN, not a belt - and a few people here have encountered broken timing chain tensioners or stretched chains, so that is a possibility as well.

Quick recap:

This thread addresses the occurrances of hard shifting/Traction Control light lit/CEL codes p0010/11/13 and/or p0014 in 2.4 L as well as in the later 2.2 L with VVT in the 2009s onward.

P0010/11 refers to the INTAKE solenoid
P0013/14 refers to the EXHAUST solenoid

The GM part numbers are as follows for the camshaft position actuator solenoids:

------------ Original-----Updated a month or two ago
Exhaust 12628348 = 12646784
Intake 12628347 = 12646783

Prices are ~$50 ea. or less it seems (down in USA - ~double that in Canada!!)

Does this mean that an 07 would not have them either?

A 07 2.2 = no. A 07 2.4 = yes, if that was the question.

Yes its a 2.4 issue only it seems.

I'm facing the same repair on my Cobalt. Occasional "TC" light accompanied by hard shifting, maybe with a Check Engine light also. Its not very frequent at this point; it did it briefly yesterday which was the first time since the initial couple of instances, 6 or 7 weeks ago. Still quite infrequent.

Its funny that I found this thread. I looked on the Cobalt forum, and there were several 2.4 owners with this problem, but they never got their questions answered. Each thread eventually died after a bunch of 2.0 Supercharged owners chimed in claiming they've never had the problem with their cars. Well, yeah, the 2.0 doesn't do it! In all fairness, the 2.4 Cobalt is a very small minority, and the forum itself is probably 50% 2.0 owners.

Cool - I just added a reference to what motors were covered to the recap above. Thanks for the reminder.

I have the bug too now

Myself, I'd stick with the GM parts rather than an aftermarket. GM now recommends some updated parts as noted below. I'd expect they would be updated in comparrison to the aftermarket ones, so I'd go with GM.

The GM numbers are as follows:

------------ Original-----Updated
Exhaust 12628348 = 12646784

Intake 12628347 = 12646783

Good luck
Well, I have the t/c light and "service traction" on when the engine has been running for awhile. Occasionally the check engine light too. Hard shifting too, but luckily not always. Autozone only has the sensors, not the solenoids. I ordered from GM-PartsCenter.com monday. Should be here around Sat, but I'll only have time this coming Monday. I'll see if I can record the resistance, and see if I can beat 35 min. Bet it'll take me an hour.

Good luck on that - I'm saying 55 minutes for you - LOL

Might be a good idea to shoot some spray lube on the air cleaner box hold down points where they mount into the grommets ahead of time. The last time I took mine apart, the front mounting point was firmly stuck in it's grommet (even tho' I had used a bit of silicone grease when reassembling it prior) - and the grommet came apart in pieces. I had to jury-rig a replacement grommet from the parts bin.
