I did mine over a year ago, and it was pretty simple but I didnt take pictures since they were already posted here. Sorry to see they are gone. Perhaps if you are daring enough to try you could document it with new photos.

This really is a great mod that makes our cars much more functional.

When I originally posted the how-to I used photobucket to host the pictures. I hadn't used photobucket in a long time and apparently the pictures "expired".

I have re-posted them, so you should be able to see the pictures now.

Good Luck

Going to give it a go

We just had a baby boy yesterday! I am taking our 2 year old daughter back to the hospital today to visit. He and mom get to come home tonight!

This obviously puts a car mod aside, but maybe in a week or two I can work on it. And since I'm home for most if not all of December from work, perfect time to order the parts and have at it! Thanks for reposting the pics Steve!

I am also assuming I will have time and the weather will cooperate.

Finding parts to do this

I know my last post said that I'd be home and have time to get to this during December, but alas, it didn't happen.

Now that I have the time to do it, I can't find the parts anywhere. www.partszoneonline.com shows the switch for $16.79 but no image. I've had too many experiences order what is supposed to be the right part number for something and it ends up being the wrong piece, which I know I could have determined if there were an image of the part.

As such I'm leary to order this switch. Can anyone confirm that this is the correct switch for this mod?

https://www.partszoneonline.com/part...&srch4=&srch5=

I tried a search for the switch and the terminal, but this search only returns the switch. I can't find the F terminals ANYWHERE. Anyone have any new locations I can search online (I'd really like to exhaust those options before I go to the local dealer).

Please let me know (1) is the above switch the right one? and (2) where can I look for the F terminal?

I'm anxious to get this mod done so I can check on my 2 kids in the back seat while on the road...the flashlight is a PITA (that and my daughter wants to play with it - far to much of a distraction).

Thanks!!

That looks like the correct part number for the dimmer switch with the dome light on/off feature. Only the 2006 HHRs used the dimmer switch without the dome light on/off. The 2007-2009 HHRs use the switch with the dome light control and gmpartsdirect shows the same part number that your partszoneonline link shows.

I don't have an answer for the terminal other than what one other poster (rodneyd218) had suggested (a few years ago):

"Hey everyone. Just to let you know, your local gm dealer should have these terminals. They are in the terminal repair kit that we all get ( I work for a chevy dealer). The part number is 12040511 as posted earlier. Tell your parts guy that they are in tray number 3 of the Delphi automotive kit. I spent the a whole month organizing these at my dealership, so I knew where they where at. This is what GM calls an "Essential" tool, so all gm shops are required to have them. If they try and tell you they don't have this kit, it's probably because they haven't organized it yet. Trust me, it's a giant pain in the backside."

Good Luck

Ohh!!! Now I'm really glad I joined this forum. The one annoyance I have so far with my HHR is I can't turn on the dome lights. This will definitely be my first mod!

I don't remember seeing this before... Really cool idea.. Don't know if it's really something I am capable of doing, think I'd probably break something...

Reviving this old thread to ask a question.

Has anyone actually added the diode to the wiring and if so has anyone used LEDs with it and did it eliminate the very dim glow?

If not no biggie, just curious as I really don't like adding in resistors because of the heat they generate. Also do not want to use "error free/CANbus" bulbs for the same reason, they can get very hot, very fast and melt a lot of stuff, specially in enclosed fixtures.

My other thought to eliminate the glow was to add in a relay so that the circuit would be physically broken with no path to ground so there should be no glow. I realize this would eliminate the dimming down feature that the lights currently exhibit when going off but that also does not bother me. Has anyone tried this?

My thoughts are, and I'm no genius, is that since the dome light does not require a signal to be sent back to the BCM, any led bulb of the correct size,SHOULD work.
DISCLAIMER- I have been wrong before,
I have also been correct before.
